Introduction

In 2017, Upwork had over 12 million registered consultants and 5,000,000 registered clients. In 2017, over a million jobs worth more than $1 billion USD were posted.
History
Elance was founded in 1998 in a two-room loft in Jersey City by MIT graduate Beerud Sheth and Wall Street veteran Srini Anumolu. The organization's 22 employees relocated to Sunnyvale, California's Silicon Valley, in December 1999. The Elance Small Business Marketplace was the company's first product.
Odysseas Tsatalos and Stratis Karamanlakis, two friends who needed to collaborate despite the fact that one was in the United States, established oDesk in 2003.Furthermore, the opposite was true in Greece. Created initially as a staffing firm, oDesk was eventually incorporated into a web-based commercial centre that allowed enlisted clients to find, recruit, and collaborate with telecommuters.
Elance and oDesk announced their merger on 18th December, 2013, forming Elance-oDesk. The new organisation was rebranded as Upwork in 2015, coinciding with an update of the oDesk stage with a similar name. Upwork, which was recently renamed, also intended to phase out the Elance stage within a few years. The Upwork stage has experienced brief blackouts, with one in September 2015 prompting a conciliatory sentiment from CEO Stephane Kasriel at the time.
From 2009 to 2014, the company was listed on the Inc. 5000 list, and on October 3, 2018, it filed for its first stock sale.
How it Works
Through the foundation of the organization, Upwork allows clients to communicate with, recruit, and work with specialists and independent offices. The client posts a representation of their work as well as the price range they are willing to pay for a specialist to complete it. The client may invite specific consultants to apply for their positions, or they may post the job for anyone with an interest to use. When the client has decided who they need to complete the task, they enlist that specialist by sending an agreement with set hours, pay rate, and a deadline for the work to be completed.
The Upwork stage includes a continuous talk feature that either clients or specialists can use to message potential clients. The time tracker application on Upwork records the specialist's keystrokes and mouse develops and captures screen captures for submission to their client.
